New control tower for Heathrow
Engineering Jobs
The world’s busiest international airport introduced the biggest change in air traffic operations for 50 years.
In a move made necessary by Heathrow’s fifth terminal expansion, the controllers moved to the new £50 million tower.
Arrivals to the London airport were cut by 10 per cent to reduce the workflow while workers familiarised themselves with the new technology and view of the runways.
Some delays expected
The National Air Traffic Service (Nats), the partly-privatised air traffic management group, told The Independent that the new system will work well but warned of some delays.
British Airways, Heathrow’s biggest airline, utilised a contingency plan to prepare for the delay the new tower may bring.
A spokesperson said: "We have got plans in place with regards to informing customers and dealing with operational issues at the airport."
The new, taller tower at 285ft replaced the older tower which was built in 1955.
