European engineers are developing a sensor vest that can measure the levels of physical stress the wearer is experiencing at a given time.
 
The programme, which is part of the EU CONTEXT project, comes under the rubric of wearable electronics.
 
When people are stressed, their muscle tension changes subtly. The electrodes in the vest will be capable of measuring and monitoring this effect.
 
The brainchild of students from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, the idea came about as an alternative to direct application of sensors during research the stress states. The students found that having electrodes directly attached caused a level of stress in and of itself, thereby negating test results.
 
Moving on from this, the developers see further applications in fields such as computer games and health and safety.
