Leading computer chip manufacturer Intel has proclaimed that the new, superior processing power of their units could lead to a revolution in game controlling hardware.

Speaking to Business Week magazine, Intel’s chief technology officer, Justin Rattner, said: “We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo's] Wii won't have hand controllers." Rattner suggests that camera technology could be advanced enough to replace hand controllers by automatically following the motion of players as they move.

The company has announced that it is already in talks with leading console manufacturers about implementing a chip technology capable of performing over a million calculations a second.

The console market

Intel have found themselves largely absent from the current videogame development market, despite dominating in the world of personal computers. Currently, IBM supplies processing power for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft consoles.

The recent announcements from Intel are being seen as their attempt to regain some footing in the games market and – if they can produce 1 trillion calculations per second – they would outshine the current generation of consoles significantly. PlayStation Cell, for example, can perform around 256 billion calculations per second.
