The art of digital science and engineering

A new initiative, with partners including the British Film Institute, Sony and Samsung Design Europe, aims to break down the gap which exists between the territory of art – on one side – and science and engineering, on the other.

Based at Kingston University, the venture – called Digital Media Kingston – means that soon postgraduate students working on computer game and 3D imaging courses can graduate with either an MA or an MSc.

Commenting on the programme, Karen Cham, development co-ordinator for Digital Media Kingston, said: “We need to move away from the idea that arts people are ‘creatives’ and scientists are ‘tecchies’. Both fields are highly creative and are increasingly working together in the digital age – an animator and a programmer designing a computer game, for example.  But at present most students in the arts and sciences across the globe don’t collaborate on projects until they meet in the world of work. This is a serious skills gap which has been identified by industry and that’s where Kingston University is spearheading change. Digital Media Kingston, with its cross-faculty initiative, is unique.”

Digital Media Kingston can also boast an impressive industry panel, including people like Alex McDowell, who was the production designer of some big budget films, for example Fight Club, The Terminal and Minority Report.

The centre will start offering six postgraduate courses starting from this September, with more – including one on special effects - scheduled to start in 2010.
