A new report by SITA, an airline industry technology supplier, indicates that passenger mobile phones could become a much larger part of travel.

Backed by research from Cambridge University, the report – presented at the company’s Air Transport IT Summit in Brussels – indicates that phones could be used to track passengers’ progress towards departure gates.

The use of phones – the report also suggests – could save the industry $600m a year in administration costs, and generate extra duty free revenue. Trials at Manchester Airport show travellers are spending 45 per cent more on duty free when prompted by money off vouchers to their mobiles.

A similar service is already in use in Japan.
