New standards developed by the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) will allow a greater degree of network connectivity between household appliances.
The IEC, based in Switzerland, is responsible for international standards and conformity assessment for government, business and society for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.
New protocol for full system
Due to be published in October, the standards will link the two different networks established for household appliances and audio visual equipment.
The new standard, called the Home Network Communication Protocol over IP for Multimedia Household Appliances (IEC 62457), could point the way towards a fully technically ‘integrated’ home with all household equipment being able to ‘share’ information without the need for gateways.
Some equipment already being sold in Japan conforms to the standard.
