Out in the fields
A new experiment by Imperial College London has sought to model the shape of British ecosystems of the future in order to better understand and prepare for the impact of climate change.
Taking on board factors such as predicted rainfall, the project will attempt to understand how different levels of plant diversity will adapt to changes.
Led by Dr Sally Power and Dr Pete Manning, the report aims to highlight how a diverse ecosystem copes with change while highlighting the threats that this ecosystem faces.
Speaking about the study, Dr Sally Power commented: “Ecosystems will be facing a multitude of challenges in the coming years. Changing rainfall patterns are likely to affect the ability of ecosystems to perform important ecological functions such as nutrient cycling; a key challenge is now to understand the implications of biodiversity loss for ecosystem functioning and the sustainability of these functions in a changing climate.”
