Car giant General Motors has announced that it is working with 34 utility companies and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to prepare the power grid for electrically-powered vehicles.

The announcement was made at the Plug-2008 conference in San Jose, California.

Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, Britta Gross, GM's manager of hydrogen and electrical infrastructure and commercialisation, commented: "We are getting to the place where we've got a vehicle that's real. We knew it was time to expand our efforts to make sure that when the vehicles came to market the infrastructure was ready, too."

GM has aimed to bring its range-extended electric Chevrolet Volt to showrooms by 2010. Powered by a lithium-ion battery and a small gasoline engine, it can achieve 40 miles via the battery.

According to the EPRI, the main issues to address before the widescale adoption of electrical vehicles are the standardisation, customer education, infrastructure and public policy.
