Quelling speculation, Orange chief executive officer Didier Lombard has revealed that his company, a subsidiary of France Telecom, has won the exclusive right to carry the new phones when they become available in November of this year.

The company believes that sales of the unit, which bundles iTunes compatibility, an onboard media player and a web browser, along with traditional phone functions, will be brisk owing to its sleek design and the desirability of the Apple brand.

Consistent with other European deals, iPhone users will pay a set amount for the device, along with committing to a fixed term contract with the supplier. At this point in time, Orange has yet to reveal any details of price plans.

Which service provider?

The news completes the picture for iPhone’s carrier strategy for the largest regions in Europe, with Telefonica in Spain, O2 in the UK and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile in Germany covering the remaining significant regions.

In the UK, the unit will cost £269 with the obligation to undertake an 18 month contract starting at £35 per month.

Although the device has been a success in the US, some experts have doubts as to whether it will be as successful in Europe as it doesn’t work on the popular and quick 3G networks. According to Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, the phone will not use the networks as it applies unnecessary pressure on the handsets internal battery.
