Signalling what could be the start of a mobile phone war, Vodafone has announced a music download service to rival that of the O2 network that are believed to have signed an exclusive deal to sell Apple’s new iPhones in the UK.

Vodafone’s service, which will offer unlimited downloads for a £2 a week subscription fee, will allow users to play song on their mobile phones but not to transfer them or keep them permanently. There will be an extra 99p charge for this service.

Aligning with major music publishers

The service will be made available on a number of 3G handsets and will work at broadband speed, much quicker than the network speed offered to US users of the iPhone.

The tracks will come from Omnifone who will be featuring tracks from the major music publishers Sony BMG, Universal, Warner and EMI.

Last month Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone manufacture, made its intentions clear by launching its own music portal to compete with Apple’s iTunes.

Music competition for the Xbox
Unsigned musicians will be given the chance to make it to stardom after Microsoft Xbox announced a national campaign to find Britain's undiscovered music talent.

Lou Reed, Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam
Lou Reed's catalogue is hardly Pinky and Perky, but 1973's Berlin - a Brechtian song cycle depicting a couple's doomed, drug-fuelled descent - is easily the most harrowing in his canon. Originally received with much derision (one reviewer called its near-the-knuckle themes "so patently offensive, one wishes to take personal vengeance on the artist"), it is hardly surprising that Reed never toured it until now.
