The orchestra, who are building a 3D replica of its concert hall, will perform works by Rachmaninov and Ravel, and will also feature two works by contemporary Liverpudlian composers.

The concert will take place on Friday 14 September at 7:30pm. Attendance is limited, so people are being asked to register for a chance to win a free ticket. The following day, however, the performance will be available to all of Second Life's eight million users.

The move is part of an effort to get classical music to new audiences and will allow attendants to chat with each other and even go to the lavatory.

Virtual fun for classical lovers

Speaking to Reuters, the orchestra's chief executive, Michael Elliott, said: "It's a lot of fun and certainly adds a different dimension to the more traditional visit to a concert hall."

Principle conductor will be Vasily Petrenko, the youngest ever in its 165 year history. He will be conducting Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances and Ravel’s Sheherazade as well as the world premieres of works by Kenneth Hesketh and John McCabe.

More on Second Life...

Amy Macdonald, This Is the Life
Pete Doherty isn't normally a benign influence, but his effect on Amy Macdonald was positive.

Expert view: Life-changing experience starts here
Every once in a while, an online innovation comes along that's so good you soon wonder how you lived without it. Google is an example (logged on to Alta Vista or Lycos recently?), YouTube another. Spend a little time with Spotify, and you could well be adding it to the list.

Pop preview: Pete Doherty, London
When a man is tired of London, he is apparently tired of life. Pete Doherty is a man proving that quite the opposite is true. After several years of helping the police with their enquiries and intermittently making music in the capital, he has lately made a decision less informed by rock'n'roll, more, seemingly, by Phil'n'Kirstie: he has downsized to enjoy a new pace of life in the country.
