Feature films for YouTube

YouTube could begin offering feature films as early as next month.

Google – YouTube’s parent company – has been reported by CNET News to be in talks with major film companies about launching an ad-supported, streaming movie service.

Some studios, however, have not agreed to pass on full-length movies to YouTube: Canada’s Lionsgate agreed in July to give YouTube access to short movie clips only.

Critics have questioned whether enough ads could be placed into a streaming movie to be profitable, without bombarding viewers with too many commercials.

Despite this, according to CNet News, YouTube’s official statement was that it’s “in negotiations with a variety of entertainment companies.”

Dirty Pretty Things
Ever since the Libertines split in 2004, Carl Barat has been regarded as the more responsible of their two co-vocalists. Admittedly, the bar has been set pretty low - in recent weeks, all he has needed to do to be the voice of reason has been to abstain from appearing on YouTube with Amy Winehouse talking gibberish to baby mice.

Expert view: Life-changing experience starts here
Every once in a while, an online innovation comes along that's so good you soon wonder how you lived without it. Google is an example (logged on to Alta Vista or Lycos recently?), YouTube another. Spend a little time with Spotify, and you could well be adding it to the list.
