LG want to join the pack releasing eBook readers, such as Amazon and Sony, except LG want to add their solar cell technology to an existing digital reader line to make them greener.
The solar cell will be manufactured to fit the size of the E Ink panel on the reader – 0.7mm thick and weighing only 20 grams.
The solar cell could extend battery life by a day after four to five hours exposure to sunlight, based on a conversion rate of 9.6 per cent.
LG also hope to boost the current conversion rate by 12 per cent by 2010 and 14 per cent by 2012, when the South Korean company will be ready to commercialise the technology.
