Electric cars, motorcycles and three-wheelers are reaching speeds of 100 mph (160kmph) on the circuit at Mason-Dixon Dragway in Maryland, USA.

The silent vehicles raced around the quarter-mile asphalt track last weekend, shedding the image that electric vehicles are slow.

"People laugh at electric cars and say they are golf carts, but they're not," said former Ferrari mechanic Jo Reyes, who now builds electric vehicles. Speaking to the AFP, he said: "We've come a long way. Look at these Teslas here, they will spank Ferraris."

Also speaking to the AFP, seasoned drag racer Travis Beall said: "Seeing them run for the first time today definitely scared me because their times are kinda close to some of my times. Every year they are getting faster and faster."

The National Electric Drag Racing Association is sponsoring such events featuring electric drag racers across the US. Electric drag racers can compete in one of three categories: Production EVs, Conversion EVs and electric motorcycles
