Formed in response to the Soviet Union’s Sputnik launch into space in 1957, NASA formed in 1958 to engineer the Moon landing programme.  Tomorrow, 29 July, is being marked as the 50th Anniversary.

On July 29, 1958, President Eisenhower signed legislation creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and NASA started with the Moon landing programmes, named Apollo and Mercury, before moving into long distance research missions of the solar system and beyond.

And now, fifty years on, NASA collaborates with Russia in the orbiting space laboratory, the International Space Station.

NASA Administrator Michael Griffin gave a speech at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (University of West Florida) on 24 July which outlined the space agency’s concerns today.  He said: “We at NASA deal with the issues surrounding man-machine interfaces every day, in flying the International Space Station, controlling over fifty Earth and space science missions in operation today, developing new flight control algorithms and avionics for future aircraft, or building the next generation of space vehicles to return Americans to the Moon and, later, journey even deeper into our solar system.

“To carry out our mission of space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research, we must understand the conditions our machines will face and how they will behave under those conditions, because mission success and, indeed, the lives of our astronauts depend upon our machines and the technical acumen of the scientists and engineers who develop and operate them.”
