BBC iPlayer launch threatened by broadband suppliers
Engineering Jobs
A report published by The Independent shows that major UK broadband suppliers, including Carphone Warehouse, Tiscali and BT, are concerned about the network strain the new player is likely to produce.
As a result, the BBC may have to face 'traffic shaping' which would restrict the amount of bandwidth it can use, limiting the amount of traffic with access to the player.
Speaking to the newspaper, an official Tiscali spokesperson said: "The potential for iPlayer to suck up capacity is a concern and we need a better dialogue with the BBC about that."
The deal
The iPlayer, will work in a similar fashion to the existing Listen Again audio player, which allows users to hear BBC radio content for up to a week after initial broadcast.
After the programme originally goes out, it will be available for up to 30 days and can then be accessed by the user for a further seven days.
The player moved into a public beta format from July this year and is expected to fully roll out in the coming months.
