The country’s leading sports innovations have been rewarded with the first ever Gatsby Innovation Award for sports concepts.
Winning entries included a heated goalkeeping glove, a new golf putter grip, improved bicycle front forks and a portable hydration monitor.
The inventors of the winning entries will now have the opportunity to work with Loughborough University sports technology experts to develop the concepts further.
Commenting on the winning entries, Loughborough University Sports Technology Director, Professor Mike Caine, commented: “As specialists in the commercial development of design-led innovation, with a track record in partnering leading brands, Loughborough University Sports Technology Institute is well-placed to support these dynamic early stage companies. We look forward to providing specialist support and independent validation to strengthen the commercial prospects of their innovative products.”
The winning entrants included ex-Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United goalkeeper Darren Hayes, who achieved qualifications in sports science after finishing his professional football career.
