Auto waste
Engineering Jobs
Researchers from Columbus, Ohio, have invented a new material which – they claim – could convert exhaust into electricity, thereby making cars more efficient.
As experts argue that a considerable amount of a car’s energy goes to waste through the exhaust pipe (as much as 60 per cent) capturing that lost energy could prove a significant step towards efficiency.
Furthermore, the scientists claim that the material is twice as efficient as anything similar available on the market today and could be adopted for use on power generators and heat pumps.
Commenting on the material, Joseph Heremans, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Nanotechnology at Ohio State University, said: "The material does all the work. It produces electrical power just like conventional heat engines - steam engines, gas or diesel engines - that are coupled to electrical generators, but it uses electrons as the working fluids instead of water or gases, and makes electricity directly."
