Sony releases upgrade featuring Skype.

Free calls are an installation and a registration away for PSP owners. Sony has released the latest firmware upgrade - update 3.90 - today, and with a headset and remote control, users could be making telephone calls over the internet or Skype across the world.

However, this update will allow Slim & Lite models to utilise Skype; those with older models, such as the original 1000 series PSPs, will have to wait to install Go!Messenger. The second upgrade offers video calls, instant messaging, voice chat and voice messaging and is compatible with both PSP hardware variations. This service will go live at the end of February and not before.

Slim & Lite users will also be able to make paid for calls to landlines and mobiles with the latest Skype upgrade.

Sony announced the upgrades for the PSP at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this month in Las Vegas.
