Sony targets energy consumption
Engineering Jobs
Sony Europe has reduced the power consumption in 90 per cent of its products during the last financial year as a part of its commitment to developing a sustainable society.
The figures, which were released as part of its recent corporate and social responsibility (CSR) report, demonstrate its stated aim to make products - for both homes and offices - that use less energy.
In recognition of their efforts, the company have become the first consumer electronics and entertainment company to win the Sustainable Energy Europe Award from the European Commission
Serge Foucher, Executive Vice President of Sony Europe said: "Sony is committed to continually developing new innovations and technologies that will further improve the energy efficiency, and minimise the environmental impact, of our products. We are proud that our efforts are awarded by renowned European organisations and that we work with strong international partners to promote energy efficiency and environmental awareness."
New green innovations
New green innovations include the Advanced VAIO Power Management function for its notebooks. This allows users to turn off functions of the machine - including the optical drive, audio functions and network capability - to save energy while they are not being used.
They have also been working on 'stamina' engineering, which allows for longer playback periods. In their Walkman S series, this has led to up to 50 hours worth of play at an overall energy reduction of 25 per cent compared to previous models.
In July 2006, the company signed an agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to join its Climate Savers Programme and has committed to reduce the energy consumption of major Sony products year on year.
