Dana Centre hosts new media event
Running from 9 - 11 May, the event will explore how emerging technologies are transforming creative possibilities, social structures and communication networks through a series of workshops, talks and audience participation performances.
Workshops each morning and afternoon will give visitors the tools to join the do-it-yourself digital revolution through hands-on opportunities to find out about blogging, podcasting or how to hack into their Game Boy.
There will also be a series of 15-minute talks on Wednesday and Thursday evenings by new media artists using emerging technologies.
Among the speakers will be Jasia Reichardt, who has been at the forefront of the rise of new media art for three decades, and film futurist Matt Hanson, who will talk about Swarm of Angels, an ongoing participative cinema project.
Events each evening will end with new media art performances ranging from performance poetry to improvised music.
Gaetan Lee, Festival Organiser at the Science Museum’s Dana Centre, said: "The Takeaway Festival is for anyone who wants to be creative online.
"It will give people the tools to be part of the new media do-it-yourself revolution. They will be able to hear about fantastic technological futures and learn how to contribute to the do-it-yourself digital revolution."
Everything is interactive
Everything about the Takeaway Festival is interactive - including the art exhibits.
Visitors will be able to create their own comic strip digital artwork using photos of their face, bits of gossip, drawings and comments – they can then print out their masterpiece and take it away.
They will also be able to create an interactive online memoir of the event to enhance their experience of the day.
Using RFID (radio frequency identification device), people will tag what they’ve enjoyed most and take pictures on their mobile to create a personal timeline.
The Dana Centre is the Science Museum’s adults-only bar and café dedicated to hosting informative and innovative discussions, performances and events on contemporary science, technology and culture.
