Virtual power

Designing power plants is a complex business involving fluid flows, pressure and temperature, among many other factors.

New technology from the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation, however, could make it easier.
The institute has combined 3D plant engineering and simulation with virtual reality to allow engineers to visual the process.

Speaking on the Fraunhofer website, Dr. Matthias Gohla, Manager of the Process and Plant Engineering Business Unit, said: “A special software tool has enabled us to visualise all the motion sequences for the first time ever – at  just the push of a button.”

The system could also make life easier for technicians involved with maintaining the site as – rather than having to leaf through a thick manual – they could simply click on the faulty component and find out the relevant details. Further benefits could include being able to simulate dangerous scenarios for training purposes.
