Mobile phone operators eye up Web 2.0
Engineering Jobs
Findings published by Juniper Research suggest that mobile operators are set to reap the rewards of the blossoming online social networking community fostered by websites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.
Revenue for mobile operators, it suggests, could grow 10 times during the next five years.
Dr Windsor Holden, the study’s author, said: "One of the most attractive elements of social networking on a mobile phone is that it's universally accessible so people can look up their friends; update their status or whatever on the move, which for the young demographic is particularly appealing."
The success of Web 2.0 looks set to expand, with social networking being one of the fastest growing user attractors online.
Facebook as phonebook
Facebook currently boasts 52 million users (internationally) and has experienced a user jump of 270 per cent from 2006. MySpace, owned by News Corps., has an estimated 114 million users worldwide.
These figures are of obvious interest to mobile network owners.
Facebook is already gaining traction on US-based AT&T, Verizon and Sprint/Nextel networks.
In the UK, Vodafone has signed up with Google for exclusive YouTube access.
