This year’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers Formula Student competition saw the University of Hertfordshire’s Student Hydrogen Car win the cup for Least Carbon Produced.
The university also won the Class 1-200 Cup for re-engineered cars for the third year in a row.
The winning green entry raced at Silverstone last weekend and was also named the overall winner in the new Class1a for ‘alternative powered cars’.
Hertfordshire’s green car runs completely on renewable fuel, emits zero CO2 and has power almost equal to a petrol car.
“The university was the largest single represented university at the competition,” said Alan Combes, Head of Automotive Engineering at Hertfordshire. “We were also the only university to build its Class 1 entry to the new 2009 chassis regulations. We did this so that next year’s teams will inherit a legal car to enter into the 2009 Class 1-200 competition, which will give them a head start over other teams.”
His year marked the first time in eleven years that the competition ran a category for cars powered by alternative fuels.
